Dark Water does an amazing job of touching on many real life issues while simultaneously bringing fear into the viewer using classic horror techniques. The film utilizes classic horror film strategies and it delivers a engaging yet creepy feel to the entire film. The lighting used along with various shots gives the film an eerie feel throughout its entirety.

Not only does the film give a classic horror feel but it also brings up issues such as family trauma and custody issues. The film heavily focuses on the custody battle of the child and it brings another fear into the viewer. The father is portrayed as a bad influence on his child so as the case advances and the mothers mental state crumbles you get a growing fear about what will happen to Ikuko.

This goes back to the “other” appearing in multiple ways during the movie. They way it's directed leaves you thinking about the hauntings that are occuring as well as the issues the family faces. This makes the dad seem as if he is one of the “others” even tho he is barley in the film.

Overall the movie does a great job of adding other plot lines into the horror genre and it was refreshing to see. As opposed to many other horror movies, the addition of this type of issue really makes the movie feel complete and not just a shallow film of jump scares.
